New Jersey Man Dies After Being Pulled From Water at Seaside Park Beach

After being dragged from the ocean, a Seaside Park, NJ man died early Saturday morning. The occasion was tragic. Locals said emergency workers were called to 8th Avenue beach just before noon after seeing a swimmer struggling.

The Seaside Park Fire Department’s water rescue crew rescued the swimmer. His name is John DeVone, 54, from Whippany. First responders gave DeVone CPR, but he didn’t respond. He was declared deceased at Toms River’s Community Medical Center.

At the event, most Jersey Shore beaches were open for the season. Rip currents were likely due to distant storms during the weekend. All along the coast, swimming was unsafe. When lifeguards aren’t on duty, beachgoers should swim with caution.

Locals and beach officials have sent their condolences to the victim’s family and advised against swimming alone, especially since the weather can abruptly change current strength.

This tragic tragedy highlights how dangerous swimming at the Shore is late in the season without lifeguards. A peaceful beach day can turn disastrous when the waves change quickly.
